Answering yes to any of these questions could be an indication that you are experiencing job burnout.

Burnout is typically caused by exposure to prolonged periods of stress and can impact a person’s emotional, psychological and physical wellbeing. If the stress is unrelenting, you may notice that your interest in tasks and motivation to do your job starts to dissipate. Other factors that may contribute to burnout include lack of control over decision making, unclear job expectations, lack of social support and work-life imbalance.

The following symptoms may be indicators that you are experiencing job-related burnout :

  • Feeling tired and drained most of the time
  • Change in appetite or sleep habits
  • Loss of motivation
  • Increasingly cynical and negative outlook
  • Decreased satisfaction and sense of accomplishment
  • Using food, drugs, or alcohol to cope
  • Skipping work or coming in late and leaving early
